It is easy to find wedding fashion ideas for the bride, but what about the groom? There are not very many resources for men’s wedding fashion, so I asked my husband to share some ideas for groom wedding attire. Despite popular opinion, fashion is not exclusive to women, and men want to look good on their wedding day, too! Finding the right groomsmen or groom outfit for your wedding day doesn’t have to be difficult. With these tips, your groom and groomsmen will look stylish and sleek on the big day.

Having gone through my own wedding, and countless others over the past few years, for these tips I want to introduce a point of view sorely missed from most wedding resources…the male one! I fashion myself a bit of a wedding savant, having cared nothing about them, previous to my own, and now I feel rather immersed in their intricacy. So here we go, my official advice on men’s wedding fashion. Hopefully, this won’t be my last, and if you like it, please, by all means, let me know.

1. Let Groomsmen Choose the Style That Works for Them

So we see this a lot with bridesmaids, but not nearly enough with groomsmen–let the groomsmen choose their own suits in a similar color, but not exactly the same design. I have seen this done before and it makes for a great fashion statement. This will make the men in your wedding much more comfortable on your wedding day, knowing that they are wearing something that they not only look good in, but something that they are comfortable wearing. With a huge budget, stylish suits lined up next to one another makes an unbelievably great impression. But with budgets that are stretched, one must be creative, and at times, that means each groomsmen wearing their best suit, and creating uniformity with ties and other accessories. For those groomsmen who need a little help in choosing a fashionable suit, or if you are struggling with groom outfit ideas, direct them to Nordstrom’s men’s suit selection. I find the selection to be extremely stylish yet affordable. Remember – men’s wedding fashion does not have to cost a fortune!

2. Say NO to Pastels on your Wedding Day

This may be controversial, but please avoid pastels as it relates to men’s wedding fashion, including groom attire. Men’s fashion works best when it is traditional and bold. I like Easter, I love Miami, and I’ll be the first to reach for a pack of Skittles, I just don’t think pastels have any place in men’s fashion, especially on your wedding day. Think back to the times when you have looked at a man, and thought, “Wow, that guy is well dressed.” They were probably wearing a traditional black and white suit. If it were me, and I were planning an event that would be photographed and looked at with admiration 30 years from now, I’d probably want it to be in a suit that could stand the test of time. When in doubt, go with a classic look for the men in your wedding.

3. Cut is Everything when it Comes to Men’s Wedding Fashion

As a groom trying to look his best on his wedding day, you might be looking for groom outfit ideas that are extremely unique or “next level.” But here’s the truth–men’s wedding fashion simply doesn’t change all that much. What looks good now looked great 30 and 40 years ago, and will look good 20 years from now. Men’s wedding fashion is timeless and classic. Men’s fashion has always been and will always be made in the cut. You can take a picture of George Clooney from this year’s Oscars and put him next to a picture of Frank Sinatra and what has changed? The size of the lapels? The button placement? And even that varies by designer, season and year. Thus, if you want to impress with the fashion in your wedding, don’t rent, buy…and then make sure the suit is tailored and cut appropriately to best fit your body frame. Having a suit that fits properly and that has a flattering cut will give your groom and groomsmen the confidence that they need when they are walking down the aisle on your wedding day.

4. The Shoe is Just as Important as the Suit

I love seeing casual shoes in wedding pictures when it’s done right. It can be a fun way to add some personality to your men’s wedding looks. And if I had an outdoor wedding, there’s a good chance that you would see me in a pair of Converse. But wearing casual shoes can be really hard to pull off. So unless you have a keen fashion sense and it fits into the overall feel of your wedding, I would recommend finding other ways to make an outfit unique besides the casual shoe. If you are looking for unique groom outfit ideas for your wedding, make sure that you are considering the overall mood that you want to set for your wedding, and consider what it will look like in pictures when you look back on them years from now.

5. Be Direct With the Men in Your Wedding

Let me give the single most important piece of advice that I can give. With men, be specific and direct about what you want them to wear in your wedding. Don’t leave room for interpretation if you know what you want. Men, for the most part, tolerate weddings for the sake of marriage. So make it easy on him, by saying what you mean, and if you have something that you really want, letting him know that in as direct a manner as possible. Men’s wedding fashion doesn’t have to be difficult, and if communicated directly, can turn out just the way that you want it to look.

Happy planning!
