Potential Wedding Problem #1: Hiring a Friendor (AKA a Friend for a Service)

Hiring a friend as a wedding vendor can sound like a great idea. You can support a friend or family member while also saving some money on your wedding. How could it go wrong? Well, here’s the thing. This can actually go downhill pretty quickly. When you have a personal relationship with someone, they may not have a contract to provide. Because of this, there is nothing that commits them to providing the service, and you have nothing to fall back on if they don’t. It is also important to note that many professional vendors have insurance, certifications, etc. If your friend does not have these qualifications, there are things that can go wrong that you may not think about. For example, caterers and cake bakers have food safety standards. These help prevent your wedding guests from being sick. If something happens and they do get sick, both the caterer and you would be covered through their insurance. If you do decide to use a friend as a wedding vendor, make sure that you have covered all of your bases and that you have the protection that you need to prevent this from becoming a wedding disaster.

Potential Wedding Problem #2: Not Budgeting Correctly

If you have read any of my budgeting blogs, you know that there are so many things that often fall through the cracks when you are making your wedding budget, and there is often some sticker shock when you see how much you have actually spent. It is important to consider every little thing that goes into your wedding when you are planning your budget. You don’t want to run out of money right before the wedding! If vendors don’t get paid, they don’t provide services, which can lead to a wedding disaster. Before you pay any deposits or consider applying for a loan, plan out exactly how much you expect to spend on your wedding. You also want to include a cushion for those unexpected expenses that will pop up along the way. When it comes to weddings, it is always better to be under budget rather than over budget!

Potential Wedding Problem #3: Bad Weather

The biggest concern of any bride with an outdoor wedding or wedding reception is the weather. No one wants a rainy wedding day. When you are planning, consider your environment and always have a Plan B. Make sure that you are prepared for the possibility of bad weather. Most venues will offer a backup plan, whether it is an indoor space or even a tent that they can set up. Don’t forget that weather means more than just rain. Depending on the location and the time of year, it could be excessively hot, excessively cold, or even snowing! Ask your venue about things like heaters, fans, or even shade. Make sure that you have let your guests know that the wedding will be outdoors so that they can plan for this, as well.

Potential Wedding Problem #4: Important People Are Late

More often than not, people are late to a wedding. Whether it’s traffic or even a wardrobe malfunction, someone will be late. This becomes a problem when it is people who are very important to you or your ceremony. This means the officiant, members of the wedding party, or even close family members. The last thing that you want to do is wait around when you are ready to start your wedding ceremony because someone is running late. Because of this, be sure to give yourself extra time. If you have a drive from where you are getting ready to your wedding ceremony, add in some extra drive time, just to be safe. Make sure that you also check out the local events beforehand. Major events like concerts, sporting events, etc. can cause traffic to back up. Finally, a great way to ensure your wedding party all arrives on time and together is to arrange everything with a transportation company ahead of time. That way you can be absolutely certain everyone leaves together and no one is left behind!

Potential Wedding Problem #5: Wardrobe Malfunctions

Wardrobe malfunctions can be such a nuisance, despite whether they are major or minor. It could be a stain, a rip, a missing button, or even poor tailoring. To prevent a wedding day wardrobe malfunction, I recommend doing a try on before the big day – this goes for your wedding party, too. Not only does wedding day attire need to be tried on when it is picked up, but also a day or two before the wedding. You want to make sure that everything still fits properly and that everything is still intact. For emergency situations, make sure that you have a sewing kit on hand, complete with safety pins, fashion tape, and stain remover. With these tools in your arsenal, you should be able to handle any wardrobe malfunctions so they don’t slow down your special day.
